This is a technique where each sperm cell is placed inside each mature egg, with the help of a powerful microscope with extreme precision micromanipulation equipment. The process is performed in the laboratory on the same day of the oocyte retrieval.
This procedure is indicated mainly for cases of: - Infertility caused by male factor (minimal quantity of spermatozoa), conditions requiring direct collection of the spermatozoon from the testicles or epididymus*, or - Couples showing very low fertilization rates in previous IVF attempts. * Basically, there are 4 techniques for direct sperm aspiration. Two from the epididyms, and two from the testicles. The Percutaneous Epididymis Sperm Aspiration, is known as PESA. The Micro Surgical Epididymus Sperm Aspiration is called MESA. In the testicles, the Testicle Sperm Aspiration is known as TESA. And the Testicular Tissue Sperm Extraction is called TESE. The remaining part of the process is identical to classical "in-vitro" Fertilization. The only difference is the fertilization method (gamete micromanipulation in the laboratory).
